What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to add volume, smooth lines, and restore a youthful appearance without the need for surgery. They are commonly injected around the eyes, mouth, and nose to address areas where the skin may have lost elasticity and volume.

As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, the protein responsible for skin structure and volume. This reduction can lead to skin laxity, thinning, and the formation of wrinkles and creases – common, natural frustrations among many of our patients. Dermal fillers work by replenishing this lost volume, effectively plumping up the skin and diminishing the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles.

The procedure itself is typically quick, often taking 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the areas being treated. One of the best things about dermal fillers? With hyaluronic acid fillers, most people see immediate improvement. Most individuals can return to their daily activities right away, with only minor restrictions, including avoiding strenuous exercise for 1-2 days. Mild bruising is possible, but generally fades quickly. While individual results can vary based on the type of filler, treatment area, and personal factors, fillers typically last from several months to years.

Why Are Dermal Fillers So Popular?

The popularity of dermal fillers is undeniable. In the U.S. alone, over 3 million people choose these treatments annually, making them the second most common non-surgical cosmetic procedure after neurotoxins. Many celebrities are open about their positive experiences with these fillers, as well.

Specifically, patients see the following benefits from dermal fillers:

  • Adding volume to sagging skin
  • Improving facial symmetry
  • Plumping lips and cheeks
  • Smoothing wrinkles and creases

Beyond cosmetic enhancement, fillers are also used in certain medical scenarios, such as to restore facial volume.

Types of Dermal Fillers

There are several types of dermal fillers available, each with unique properties and durations. Our providers discuss your aesthetic goals and help determine which type is best suited for you through a customized recommendation.

  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: Naturally occurring in your skin, hyaluronic acid provides volume and hydration. As we age, our bodies produce less of it. HA fillers typically last around 6 months to 1 year. Example: Restylane®
  • Microdroplet HA Filler: A treatment designed to improve skin smoothness and hydration without adding volume. It works by enhancing the skin’s moisture retention, giving a more radiant glow. Results typically last around 6 months. Example: Skinvive®
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) Fillers: A substance found in bones, CaHA is often used for moderate to severe wrinkles. CaHA restores volume, stimulating your own collagen for enhanced results. Results typically last about 1 year. Example: Radiesse®
  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) Fillers: These fillers stimulate your body’s own collagen production. They are used for smoothing deep wrinkles and results may last two years or more. The effects of PLLA appear gradually over a few months, producing natural results. Example: Sculptra®
